About Greenlight Environmental Consultancy

Greenlight is an environmental consultancy that specialises in ecology, landscape and arboriculture. Based in Diss, our services cover the entire region of East Anglia with surveyors based throughout Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire.

Operating for over 10 years, our team is small and growing, so we’re looking to hire a knowledgeable, experienced and passionate ecologist to join. Over the years, we’ve worked on a wide range of development projects and contributed to a number of different initiatives. We love to not only help our team excel in all things ecology but we also like to remain at the forefront of scientific research which is why we regularly invest in external training courses and research materials.

From bat detectors to analysis software, mapping tools to survey equipment, high specification to design software, Greenlight only use the latest, cutting-edge technology for surveys and other services. We are also dedicated to conservation, advocating for the planet through carbon balanced offsetting, conservation charity volunteering and monitoring animal populations.

Ecologist Job Overview

Position: Permanent Full-time Ecologist

Salary: Starting at £30k per annum subject to experience

Location: Ideally Suffolk or North Essex but will consider Cambridgeshire or Norfolk

Workplace: Full-time work from home position with sites based throughout East Anglia

Working hours: 35 hours p/w with overtime as TOIL

Holiday: 25 days + bank holidays

Requirements:

  • Hold a Level 1 bat licence (Level 2 desirable)
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience working within an ecological consultancy as an Assistant Ecologist or similar wildlife organisation/position
  • Experience in report writing, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Preliminary Roost Assessments, Protected Species Surveys and Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments
  • A degree or equivalent qualification in Ecology or an associated subject
  • A member of (or working towards) the Charted Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM)
  • A full clean UK driving licence

Key roles:

  • Work on a variety of small to medium scale developments from conception to completion
  • Conducting Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments, Protected Species Surveys
  • Writing associated reports to a high standard with minimal changes
  • Undertaking early morning/evening protected species surveys during peak survey season (April-September)

During your employment, we will also encourage CPD and other training, providing opportunities to work towards additional survey likes for bats, great crested newts, barn owls, etc.

Principal Ecologist

Nathan is a University of Reading postgraduate with a M.Sc in Species Identification and Surveying, and an Aberystwyth University graduate with a B.Sc Honors Degree in Zoology. Having started out as an Assistant Ecologist, he has progressed to Principal Ecologist and conducted various protected species surveys for great crested newts, reptiles, barn owls, hazel dormice, badgers and bats. Nathan currently holds a Natural England level 1 great crested newt and level 2 bat license and is working toward his level 3 and 4 bat and level 1 hazel dormouse license.
