Newt Population Estimates

If great crested newts are present within a water feature, a minimum of six survey visits should be undertaken in suitable weather conditions between mid-March and mid-June.

How Are Newt Population Estimated?

By using various different methods, our surveyors would be able to estimate whether the great crested newt population is small, medium or large, and advise on appropriate mitigation.

The standard methods that Greenlight use are:

  • Bottle trapping – This consists of setting traps overnight to safely capture and release newts
  • Torch surveys – This uses high-powered torches at dusk to spot newts in the water.

Accurate population data enables our ecologists to recommend proprtionate and effective mitigation measures, such as habitat enhancements, pond creation, or translocation under license.
